Introducing new competitions for 2018...

Novice Idiom Pro-Am

This competition is for anyone who has never made finals in a partnered blues competition of any level before. If you *have* made finals in a partnered blues competition, head on over to the Open Idiom Mix’n’Match! In the prelims of the novice idiom competition, you’ll be dancing with fellow competitors (paired randomly and rotated), but in finals, you’ll be paired with one of our super fun “pros” to strut your stuff. You’ll be competing in three different idiom dances, which we’ll select and announce ahead of time. And the best part is, the novice competition happens on Sunday, so you’ll have gotten a whole weekend of practice in the idiom dances you’re competing in!

Open Idiom Mix'n'Match

If you’ve made finals in a novice partnered blues competition before, and you have *not* won first place in one of the competitions listed here (https://www.bluesgeek.com/competitions-1/), the Open Idiom Mix’n’Match is your competition. You’ll be dancing with other competitors, randomly paired, both in prelims and finals. Similar to the novice competition, you’ll be competing in a few different idiom dances that we’ll select and announce ahead of time, but we’ll be adding an additional dance for this level. (Hooray! More challenges! Learn all the things!)

Advanced Idiom Mix'n'Match

This competition is for dancers who have won first place in one of the qualifying competitions listed here:(https://www.bluesgeek.com/competitions-1/). In this very special, super serious, shockingly intense competition, you’ll be asked to perform feats of superhuman strength, utilize time, space, glitter, and laser beams to wow the audience, create majestic works of art, and establish your dominion over the universe… Just kidding. You’re not *that* cool. Similar to both the novice and open competition, you’ll be competing in several different idiom dances that we’ll select and announce ahead of time, but we’ll be mixing it up and adding yet another dance for you to tackle. You’ll be dancing with other competitors, randomly paired, both in prelims and finals.

Open Idiom Solo

This competition is open to any attendee. This will be a straight solo dancing competition, meaning it is *not* a riffin’ or cuttin’ comp. Keeping with our idiom theme, while we’re always looking for dancers to match their movement to the music, in this competition, we’re dialing it up a few notches. We’ll be looking for specific blues vocabulary like fishtails, grinds, etc., that are appropriate for the song being played, and we’re giving more weight to dancing within the specific aesthetic that fits each song. We’re working on nailing down detailed, clear criteria, and we’ll be sharing more information as time goes on. The main thing to know for now is that you’re doing solo dancing (not riffin’ or cuttin’), and you’re blues dancing.
